Thai Elephant Ride

Elephant RideElephants have been a talisman to Thailand for thousands of years, through war and peace. They are smaller than their African counterparts, and more suited to carrying cargo. The elephant represents wisdom, strength and victory, and its image was emblazoned on the nation’s flag, temples, and coins. During ceremonies, the king would ride atop an elephant. In the days of Siam (old Thailand), elephants were used in warfare against neighboring Burma.

Local Elephant Rides

Thai Elephant rides range vastly in length and price and quality. It's important that you choose an outfit that treats their elephants fairly. Ask the natives where they go to ride elephants - you'll not only find elephant rides that take better care of the elephants, but you'll find a less expensive ride as well. Thai elephant ride lengths vary from a short 10 minute stroll to a multi-hour trek.

Elephants in Bangkok

What we don't like to see is Elephant's being paraded down the streets of Bangkok (Khao San Road) by those looking to turn them into a tourist attraction. Elephants were not meant to be paraded in front of so many people - the stress and anxiety they can feel from such treatment is abusive and, combined with malnourishment, severely shortens their lifespan.
